COPERNICUS DATA : A GAME CHANGER!

InnEO PhD will develop PhD student abilities and competencies through Earth Observation and Machine and Deep Learning applications.  These new technologies are massive game changers in the actual ecosystem. Earth Observation (EO) data market is booming due to its emerging potential and the opportunity opened for economic development. EO satellites provide valuable information regarding industry activities in multiple sectors, such as agriculture, change detection, meteorology, pollution, environment, natural resources…

The Copernicus system and its Sentinel satellite families is providing since 2014, thousand of free and data Peta Octet of free and repetitive data. This massive afflux of accessible data has created a major disruption in Earth Observation services, allowing past and prospective analysis, and development of new  services to various downstream markets.

The overall impact of the Copernicus programme on the European economy and its benefits for the Space industry, the downstream sector and end-users is calculated at about EUR 13.5 billion until 2020, without nonmonetary benefits. For downstream applications and end-users EUR 3.1 billion will be gained, while 12,450 jobs per year will be supported. At the same time, EUR 10.3 billion will benefit the European economy for upstream services and 15,580 jobs/year will be supported (Copernicus Market report, 2016).

EO is also considered as an important tool to tackle the key challenges of the 21st century (climate change, sustainable urbanization, natural resources management and disaster ) and InnEO Space PhD project will help PhD student to acquire these new skills.
